DESCRIPTION:Professor Nancy Folbre\, University of Massachusetts Amhers
t\n[nl] [nl]\nWebinar Zoom link: [url= https://syddanskuni.zoom.us/j/
61894710423 ]here.[nl] [nl]\nInvited and presented by DIAS Senior F
ellow Pieter Vanhuysse [nl] [nl] \nThe Rise and Decline of Patriarchal
Systems\n[nl] [nl]\n\nInstead of describing social systems by one no
un or another\, such as capitalism\, racism\, post-colonialism\, or patri
archy\, we can conceptualize more complex intersecting\, overlapping hier
archies based on multiple dimensions of institutional power. \n[nl][nl]\n
This presentation outlines the co-evolution of patriarchal\, racist\, nat
ionalist\, and capitalist institutions over time\, with an emphasis on co
nflicts and complementaries among different dimensions of assigned group
membership. \n[nl][nl]\nBuilding on the Marxian metaphor of an "aristocra
cy of labor\," it argues that many people find themselves in contradictor
y positions--enjoying advantages in some dimensions and disadvantages in
others. \n[nl][nl]\nIt suggests that interactions between patriarchal and
capitalist institutions help explain serious threats to sustainable econ
omic development resulting from deterioration of both the physical and th
e social climate.\n[nl]\n[nl]\n About: [nl]\nNancy Folbre is Prof
essor Emerita of Economics and Director of the Program on Gender and Care
Work at the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Ma
ssachusetts Amherst and a Senior Fellow of the Levy Economics Institute a
t Bard College in the United States. \n[nl][nl]\nHer research explores th
e interface between political economy and feminist theory\, with a partic
ular emphasis on the value of unpaid care work. In addition to numerous a
rticles published in academic journals\, she is the author of The Rise an
d Decline of Patriarchal Systems (Verso\, 2021)\, the editor of For Love
and Money: Care Work in the U.S. (Russell Sage\, 2012)\, and the author o
f Greed\, Lust\, and Gender: A History of Economic Ideas (Oxford\, 2009)\
, Valuing Children: Rethinking the Economics of the Family (Harvard\, 200
8)\, and The Invisible Heart: Economics and Family Values (New Press\, 20
01). \n[nl][nl]\nShe has also written widely for a popular audience\, inc
luding contributions to the New York Times Economix blog\, The Nation\, a
nd the American Prospect. You can learn more about her at her website and
