DESCRIPTION:Guest lecture by Mirta Galesic\, Professor at the Santa Fe
Institute\, External Faculty at the Complexity Science Hub in Vienna\, Au
stria [nl] [nl]\n\nHuman social sensing is an untapped resource fo
r computational social science [nl] [nl]\n\nThe ability to ‘sense’ t
he social environment and thereby to understand the thoughts and actions
of others allows humans to fit into their social worlds\, communicate and
cooperate\, and learn from others’ experiences. Here we argue that\, thr
ough the lens of computational social science\, this ability can be used
to advance research into human sociality. When strategically selected to
represent a specific population of interest\, human social sensors can he
lp to describe and predict societal trends\, such as elections. [nl] [nl]
\n\nTraditionally\, election polls have asked for participants’ own votin
g intentions. In three U.S. elections (2016\, 2018\, and 2020)\, and thr
ee European elections with many parties (France 2017\, Netherlands 2017\,
Sweden 2018)\, we find we could improve predictions by asking participan
ts how they thought their social circles would vote. In addition\, people
's reports of how they experience their social worlds can help to build m
odels of belief dynamics that distinguish between perceived and actual be
liefs of others in social networks. I will describe an example of such a
model (Networks of beliefs) and show how it provides a more nuanced pictu
re of belief dynamics within and between individual minds. [nl] [nl]\n\n[
b] About: [nl] \nMirta Galesic is Professor at the Santa Fe Institut
e\, External Faculty at the Complexity Science Hub in Vienna\, Austria\,
and at the Vermont Complex Systems Center\, UVM\, as well as an Associate
Researcher at the Harding Center for Risk Literacy at the University of
Potsdam\, Germany. [nl] [nl]\n\nShe studies how simple cognitive mechanis
ms interact with properties of the external environment to produce seemin
gly complex social phenomena. In one line of research\, she investigates
how apparent cognitive biases in social judgments emerge as a product of
the interplay of well-adapted minds and the statistical structure of soci
al environments. In another\, she studies how collective performance depe
nd on the interaction of group decision strategies and network structures
. A third line of research investigates opinion dynamics in real-world so
cieties using cognitively-enriched models from statistical physics. And\,
she studies how people understand and cope with uncertainty and complexi
ty inherent in many everyday decisions. [nl] [nl]\n\nThe lecture is prese
nted by DIAS in collaboration with the Digital Democracy Center and takes
place in the DIAS Auditorium\, Fioniavej 34. Everybody is welcome and no
registration is needed. \n\n[nl][nl] \n\n[i] Live stream it at [url=http
