DESCRIPTION: Sarah Hawkes\, Professor of Global Public Health at Univer
sity College London\, UK [nl] [nl] \n\nInvited and presented by DIAS
Fellow Angela Y. Chang [nl] [nl] \n\n Gender Justice for Global Healt
h: what\, why\, how? [nl] [nl] \n\n‘Gender’ is a politically charged
term\, capable of sewing divisions across generations and geographies\,
and contested by overt and well-funded ‘anti-gender’ movements around the
world. [nl] [nl]\n\nYet\, gender is also widely misunderstood – frequent
ly confused with ‘sex’ and often used as shorthand for ‘women and girls’.
In this talk I will argue that\, at its core\, gender represents the di
stribution of power – within interpersonal relationships as well as acros
s the systems and structures of every society. [nl] [nl]\n\nWhat does suc
h an understanding of gender mean for health and wellbeing? How do we int
erpret and analyse the impact of gender power relations on people’s likel
ihood of living a healthy life? [nl] [nl]\n\nIn this talk I will explore
the historical and political origins of gender in gender global health an
d analyse current institutional and organisational responses to gender wi
thin the global health eco-system. The talk will focus on showing how a m
ore comprehensive understanding of gender\, based on notions of justice\,
within the field of global health can be used to leverage gains in every
one’s health and wellbeing. \n[nl][nl] \n\n About: [nl] \nSarah
