DESCRIPTION: Guest lecture by Sara Hobolt\, Sutherland Chair and Profes
sor in the Department of Government\, London School of Economics and auth
or of “Political Entrepreneurs”\n[nl] [nl]\n\n The Polarizing Effe
ct of Partisan Echo Chambers [nl] [nl] \n\nWe are witnessing increas
ing partisan polarization across the world. It is often argued that parti
san ‘echo chambers’ are one of the drivers of both policy and affective p
olarization. In this paper\, we develop and test the argument that the po
litical homogeneity of people’s social environment shapes polarization. \
n[nl][nl]\nUsing an innovative\, large-scale pre-registered ‘lab-in-the-f
ield’ experiment\, fielded in the UK\, we examine how polarization is inf
luenced by partisan group homogeneity. We recruit nationally-representati
ve partisans and assign them to discuss a salient policy issue\, either w
ith like-minded partisans (an echo chamber) or in a mixed partisan group.
This allows us to examine how group composition affects polarization.\n[
nl][nl] \nIn line with our expectations\, we find that partisan echo cham
bers increase both policy and affective polarization compared to mixed di
scussion groups. This has important implications for our understanding of
the drivers of polarization and for how outgroup animosity might be amel
iorated in the mass public.\n[nl] [nl]\nThe lecture takes place in the DI
AS Auditorium\, Fioniavej 34. Everybody is welcome and no registration is
needed. \n\n[nl][nl] \n\n[i] Live stream it at [url=https://youtube.com/

he Digital Democracy Center (DDC)\n[nl][nl]
