 troduced in work of Katzarkov\, Kontsevich\, Pantev and Yu\, and has had 
 spectacular applications to Birational Geometry. We will report on joint 
 work with M. Kontsevich on the moduli space of irregular singular connect
 ions underlying this notion. If time permits\, then we will also say a fe
 w words about the blow-up formula for atoms\, that is a central ingredien
 t for the applications\, and that has been proved by H. Iritani in genera
 l and in our joint work with A. Gyenge for surfaces.
