DESCRIPTION:This lecture will provide some historical perspective on the r
 ise of protectionism in today’s world\, drawing on evidence from the merc
 antilist period of the early modern period\, as well as the 19th and 20th
  centuries. \n\n[b]About the speaker [/b]\nKevin Hjortshøj O'Rourke is a 
 Director of Research at the CNRS and a Professor of Economics at Sciences
  Po Paris. He is a Research Fellow at the CEPR\, where he previously serv
 ed as a founding Director of the Economic History programme\, and as Rese
 arch Director. Kevin received his PhD from Harvard in 1989\, holds an hon
 orary doctorate from the University of Southern Denmark\, and was previou
 sly the Chichele Professor of Economic History at All Souls College\, Oxf
 ord. He is currently an Editor of the Economic History Review. His own re
 search is focussed on the history of globalization and deglobalization.
